The planned € 965 million investment in military data centers – as reported by De Tijd – marks an important step towards a more resilient and sovereign digital infrastructure in Belgium.
At the Belgian Digital Infrastructure Association (BDIA), we view this as a clear signal that digital infrastructure is no longer treated as a side concern, but as a vital pillar of national security, economic strength, and societal continuity.
By investing in highly secure data centers on Belgian soil, the government not only enhances the operational capabilities of the Ministry of Defence, but also creates structural added value for other federal services.
When this infrastructure is aligned with the broader digital ecosystem – with attention to interoperability, collaboration, and shared use – it can become a powerful lever for a more coherent and strategic data policy.
As this infrastructure is further developed and its potential broader use is explored, it will be important to strike the right balance between public and private responsibilities.
Belgium already benefits from a strong and reliable ecosystem of sovereign colocation providers, capable of supporting public institutions in their digital ambitions.
Maintaining a healthy interplay between government and market actors is essential to ensure efficiency, security, and long-term resilience.
This is in line with the BDIA’s position: Belgium needs a robust digital foundation – both public and private – built on vision, trust, and technical resilience.
The country has set an ambition to strengthen its digital sovereignty. This requires investments in domestic infrastructure, reduced fragmentation in data storage, and a conscious effort to lower dependency on foreign providers.
BDIA will continue to closely monitor these developments and looks forward to working with public and private partners to help build a future-proof digital infrastructure for Belgium.
