Belgium on its way to become new large European data center hub

Belgium

The third edition of market research State of the Belgian Data Centers highlights that the data center market in Belgium is developing strongly to become a major challenger within Europe.

Belgium has become a very attractive location for (new) data center operators. This is stated in the third edition of the market research report State of the Belgian Data Centers. Examples of the growth of the Belgian data center industry include the rising construction developments in the Brussels region and Google’s expansion plans in Wallonia.

Belgium: From colocation to hyperscale

The report also shows that the domestic colocation market is professionalizing and consolidating. A recent example is the acquisition of four Proximus data centers by Datacenter United. In addition, hyperscale edge strategies are pushing the wholesale colocation market to the next level.

Another trend that is mentioned is the rising growth toward Artificial Intelligence (AI). The rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to drive unprecedented global demand for data center services. As AI applications permeate diverse industries—ranging from healthcare and finance to transportation and entertainment—the need for advanced, resilient, and scalable data processing infrastructure intensifies. The report addresses the different types of data centers that are involved in AI-computing. It includes the traditional High Performance Computing (HPC) facilities and other specialized facilities.

Furthermore, many data center operators are engaged in initiatives for sustainable, more energy-efficient data centers. Signing green power contracts, investing in solar power and building new facilities with a focus on energy efficiency are among the initiatives mentioned.
