Most sustainable data center in the country officially opened

The VUB, the UZ Brussel, Green Energy Park Vzw and Ghelamco opened this week the first so-called ‘sustainable by design’ data center on the grounds of the Research Park in Zellik.

The new Nexus data center has a triple certification (Uptime Tier III, BREEAM Excellent, EDGE Advanced) and should become the cornerstone of a CO2-neutral multi-energy grid. In addition to the servers of the UZ Brussel and the VUB, the data center also houses the latest generation Flemish supercomputer.

Maximum energy efficiency
The design of the Nexus data center, with nine floors and an area of about ten thousand square meters, is aimed at maximum energy efficiency. ‘The energy used has a hundred percent renewable origin and is partially generated locally,’ a press release reads. ‘In addition, heat from the servers is recovered, rainwater is used for cooling and the building uses circular materials.’

‘As a result of close cooperation with GEP Vzw, VUB, UZ Brussel and stakeholders, this is the first truly sustainable by Design data center in our region,’ states Michael Gheysens, Ghelamco Managing Director Belgium. ‘In addition to sustainability, far-reaching innovation and progressive technical choices, this state-of-the-art project exceeds prevailing industry standards and sets new standards for future-proof data infrastructure.’
