Why local colocation matters for Belgium’s digital resilience

Belgium’s digital infrastructure is under growing pressure. The demand for high-performance, low-latency IT environments is being driven by cloud adoption, the rapid rise of AI applications, and the increasing complexity of compliance frameworks such as NIS2 and GDPR.

In this context, the role of local colocation facilities is evolving from a technical service to a strategic enabler of national digital resilience. Placing IT systems in professionally managed, regionally located data centers allows organizations to:

    • Keep sensitive data within national borders.
    • Ensure compliance with EU and Belgian regulations.
    • Reduce latency for critical applications in healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, and public services.
    • Contribute to sustainability goals through shared infrastructure and efficient energy use.

We are losing position versus our neighboring countries, and the contribution to Belgium’s economic GDP is enormous, both directly in financial terms and indirectly through employment. If we fail to act, we risk missing the boat on digital infrastructure, just as Belgium did with e-commerce adoption, where we fell behind countries like the Netherlands.

People, governments, and industry must understand that digital infrastructure is the foundation on which entire service industries are built, from fintech and eHealth to smart logistics and AI-driven manufacturing.

Friso Haringsma, Chair of BDIA, stresses that this is not just about business efficiency: “Colocation is part of the infrastructure layer that supports economic growth, public services, and innovation. It strengthens digital sovereignty and ensures Belgium remains an attractive and competitive hub in Europe.”

For BDIA, colocation is not just a technical solution, but a strategic building block of a resilient and future-proof digital economy. It combines performance, compliance, and sustainability, while strengthening Belgium’s digital sovereignty. By doing so, it creates an ecosystem that benefits both the private and public sectors, reinforcing our position as a leading digital hub in Europe.
